Black and White Photos of Apperson St. in the 1950's
This is what I looked like in 1953 in front of the house. The dog is a Boston Terrier named "Blackie". For you dog fanciers, Blackie's Sire was "Sir Mickey" and his Dam was "Biona Chessie". Notice that there's no landscaping to speak of.
This is my sister and our unreliable 1939 Dodge. This view is looking East on Apperson. Lantana has been planted and there's a rock fence in place. You can see the water level indicator just above and to the left of my sister's head. She's smiling now but won't be when the Dodge doesn't start.
This is our MG TC and my grandmother is in the driver's seat. I've just been informed that the car behind the MG belonged to my (then) future brother-in-law and the picture, indeed, was taken on Apperson St. looking Northeast. Somehow I don't remember my grandmother as being much of a race car driver. Her name was Ada and we called her Grand Ada.
OK, so these pictures aren't about dogs, but this is Blackie and Apperson St., looking North, is in the background
This is the main deck on 6728 Apperson St. I wish someone had warned me about taking pictures looking into the sun.
This is what the front yard looked like just after the Lantana was planted.
This is a very good (relatively speaking) picture of the front of the house shortly after we moved in. Note that my father had not bought his MG yet.
This is the only picture of Apperson St. looking West. At the very top of the picture Apperson St. went up over a rise. Presumably this rise was solid rock and when they bulldozed the street it was too much trouble to level the street at this point.
My parents built this above ground swimming pool. It was 4 feet deep, and I think someone is standing on his head under water for this picture. The Rivera house can be seen in the background.
Here's another picture of Apperson St. looking Northeast. Again the water gauge can be seen.
As an editorial comment, this was written on the back of the previous picture. It reads: "Up the road from the house - very rough - probably will be paved some day." This looks like my Grand Ada's handwriting.
Here's another picture of my race car driving Grandmother. This picture shows better the house just across the street.
In our backyard. Two Yucca plants in bloom. In the background can be seen the backs of the fences of houses on Haines Canyon. I think that these fences were built so that the lots of the Haines Canyon houses were level. Sort of bulkheads, if you will.
And here's another picture of Apperson St. looking North East. The large home on Haines Canyon can be seen.
Grand Ada has been found !!. Here she is during a pit stop, sitting on the porch of 6728 Apperson St. How we got her out of the MG I'll never know.
Here are the Yucca trees in bloom again, although I'm not in the picture this time. Nothing really new to show here.
This is a picture of 6728 Apperson St. from a different perspective. We are standing in the back yard looking north and up toward the back of the house. It looks like the ground has been cleared for the above-ground swimming pool but it's not been built yet. Someone is standing on the porch. I think it's my mother. To her left is a glass ball inside a rope webbing. This came from Hawaii and was used to anchor fishing nets (I think).
Grand Ada has written on the back of this last picture. Here's what she wrote: "Back of house showing porch off from Bonney's room. The porch off the living room - glass windows- as big almost as living room & appear to be a part of it." Bonney was my mother.
